Our Schools & Teachers need help!
Posted Friday, November 13, 2009 12:49 PM

My wife is a 2nd grade teacher. Yesterday a 3rd grader was removed in handcuffs by police, it's happened before, this was the first I had heard about it. How did we lose the control in some of our schools, Schools should not have to deal situations like this and How do we correct this situation?

Our generation should comment on this!  BTW CHS 1970, we are the maturing citizens, we should not be shy about offering suggestions.

Wow! Another sign of the decline of the American Empire...solutions? hard question. Mayhaps if we stop wasting money abroad & fund our schools? Too many single moms/dads having to work to survive?

My Dad gave up when a kid got stabbed in the stomach outside his homeroom. He was the 1st one on the scene...

Larry,

The school system has become a surrogate parental system.  Some of these students are impossible because of their lack of parental guidance, discipline and social development.

Our school systems are not equipped, nor should they be, to cope with this situation.

However, we need to figure this out quickly.

Carl:  I agree totally. However, this problem hasn't developed overnite. I hate to keep bringing up my Dad, but that's the only close contact I've had w/ the Education system as I have no children that I know of...some women just love to hear that...&, other than paying taxes & observing other peoples kids, I'm not sure what I can contribute.

My Dad was Dean of Boys for a year. He would come home in such a bad mood most of the time. That's when I knew I didn't want to be a teacher. I remember one of his complaints: My Mom would make him put the cats out at nite because she didn't want them to hate her...the same with the teachers as they would send him all of their discipline problems...

No simple answers...mayhaps some teachers will add to this tapestry...where does your wife teach & what did the kid do to warrant handcuffing?

Larry,

The kid is in Flight or Fight mode.  Although the desk chairs are small he can swing and seriously hurt someone.

The school has a zero tolerance policy that dictates the  police in some situations .  The zero tolerance over rides common sense.  You and I might wrestle the chair away from him then maybe sit on the floor with him and work through the problem.

My point is the school is not prepared nor capable of dealing with these behavior issues.  Schools are in the education business, not parenting business, not counseling business or prison business.

We need to get the school back in the education business.

If it's not coming from the parents, so the schools have to do it. But I'll bet there's no money in the budget for Councilors? Class size is also a problem.

How did it get to the point where he's swinging a chair around? Just like this Major @ Ft Hood, has he been passed on & up? Let someone else worry about the problem.

...& how did this Major get to that rank w/o somebody noticing? "It's hard to get rid of bad Doctors..." Substandard work at Walter Reed, so let's move him to Ft Hood?

There's got to be more to both of these stories...
